Meeting Minnesotans in Samoa

July 5, 2007

While taking the ferry to Savaii, I met a former Samoan Peace Corps Volunteer, Paul Hoyer; his Samoan wife, Vau; and their daughters, Anna (17) and Emily (20) from Rochester, MN. Paul served in 1974 where he met his wife. He now works at the Mayo Clinic where he examines chromosomes for abnormalities. His wife heads a department making wedding gowns.

Derek Marshall and I had a wonderful afternoon of swimming, eating, and chatting at Vau’s parent’s house in the village of Faiaai. For Derek the meeting was most meaningful. He, like Paul, faces departing Samoa with a love being left behind, a love that is at the same point in her life, as Paul’s wife was at hers. The islands and its people are indeed beautiful and difficult to leave behind.
